Leash and Toilet Training a Cat/Kitten?

I will be a first time kitten owner in about a month and am using this time to read lots of books about owning a kitten. One of the things I have come across a lot is leash training and toilet training. I have never seen cats do either of these before, and wanted to know if any of you have personally trained your cats to do these things or have seen it in action. Does it really work?
